Leo Montegut Arrested in Fraud Investigation

Leo J. Montegut, 57, of New York, NY was arrested Thursday, January 17, 2019 in connection to a fraud investigation.

In December 2015, detectives with the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office Financial Crimes division began an investigation that a family estate managed by a court appointed administrator was defrauded. Detectives discovered that Montegut had been linked to a scheme in which several fake and forged court documents were submitted to an area business. These fake court documents caused monetary funds in the amount of several thousand to be improperly diverted to a bank account for Montegut who lived in New York at various times during the investigation.

Through further investigation, detectives learned that several deposited estate checks had forged signatures. It was also discovered that the signature of an ad hoc judge appointed to oversee the ongoing court process and court orders was forged as well.

The investigation is ongoing. The SJSO is receiving assistance in this case from agencies in New York and California.

Based on investigation, detectives obtained a judicial warrant for Montegut’s arrest. He was charged with five counts of principal to forgery, five counts of injuring public records (felony), theft -$5,000 - $25,000 (felony and three counts of forgery (felony). He is being held in custody in lieu of a $75,000 bond.
