SJSO Recovers Body in Mississippi River
The St. John Sheriff’s Office is investigating after the discovery of a body floating in the Mississippi River in Garyville.
The SJSO received a call April 24, 2024 about 8:30 a.m. of a body floating in the river in Garyville. Officers, along with the West St. John Fire Department, removed the body of a man, badly decomposed, from the river near the levee in Edgard by 11:30 a.m.
The identity of the body is unknown at this time. More information will be announced as it becomes available.

Congratulations to Joseph Meyers
Sheriff Mike Tregre was excited to present Joseph Meyers with the 2023-24 academic scholarship from the Louisiana Sheriffs’ Association Scholarship Program.
Meyers, a 2024 graduate of Riverside Academy in Reserve, will attend Nicholls State University to study forensic science. Meyers plans to earn a degree and work in some field of criminology.
At Riverside, Meyers was captain of the 2022-2024 Marching Band. He also won the 2023 John Philip Sousa Band Award presented to the most outstanding band student. He qualified for the 2024 district literary rally and also participates in community theater.
Meyers is the son of Carol Webre. He will receive $1,000 for educational expenses.
Several applications were received from graduating seniors attending all St. John Parish high schools. Qualities such as academic achievement, leadership, character, and community involvement are considered. Applications were reviewed by an SJSO employees committee and the committee then submitted its recommendations to Sheriff Tregre.
Applicants must be a permanent resident of Louisiana, use the scholarship for higher education within the state of Louisiana, and be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student.
The Louisiana Sheriffs’ Educational Scholarship Program awards $1,000 to graduating high school students in parishes where the sheriffs are members of the Louisiana Sheriffs’ Honorary Membership Program. Funding for the scholarship is made possible through the support of St. John the Baptist Parish’s honorary members.
